Stakeholders in Bauchi State have called on the National Assembly to assign constitutional roles to traditional rulers, create additional local government areas, and carve out a new state from the present Bauchi State in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
These demands were articulated during a one-day town hall summit held on Tuesday, convened by Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District. The summit was organised in partnership with the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bauchi South Zonal Executive Committee to promote inclusive dialogue on the review of the 1999 Constitution.
The forum drew a diverse audience, including public officials, traditional leaders, legal practitioners, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, artisans, trade unions, political stakeholders, and members of the general public.
Hon. Abdulmumini Mohammed Kundak, Chairman of the APC South Zonal Constitution Review Committee, stated that the summit was designed to harvest robust public input and forge a unified regional position reflective of the state’s socio-political diversity.
He noted that the final recommendations from the summit would be presented at the North-East zonal public hearing scheduled to hold in Maiduguri, Borno State.
A resolution was adopted to establish a technical committee tasked with collecting, reviewing, and harmonising community submissions. The objective is to streamline all proposals, eliminate redundancies, and ensure clarity and cohesion.
Barr. Ibrahim Yakubu Umar was appointed chairman of the committee. He pledged to oversee a transparent, timely, and inclusive process in collating memoranda from stakeholders across Bauchi South.
Organisers described the summit as a significant milestone in ensuring that the voices of Bauchi South constituents are prominently represented in the constitutional reform agenda.
