Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, have signaled their departure from the party to back a new opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
This development was confirmed in a communiqué issued on Tuesday following a high-level meeting of Concerned PDP Leaders in Abuja.
Also in attendance were former Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), among other senior stakeholders. The closed-door session focused on the deepening crisis within the PDP and the strategic path forward for opposition politics in Nigeria.
The leaders criticized the APC administration, describing it as a “national disaster” that rose to power through “false and malicious propaganda” and has now failed to deliver on its promises.
They further decried the deteriorating quality of life under the current administration, stating: “All indicators of national development have collapsed, and ordinary Nigerians now live in extreme hardship.”
In a scathing appraisal of the PDP’s current state, the group expressed disappointment, stating that the party—once regarded as a disciplined and capable national platform—has become a mere shadow of its former self.
They attributed the mass defection of elected officials from the PDP to what they described as a campaign of “threats, blackmail, and patronage” orchestrated by the APC.
The leaders concluded with a call to action, urging all committed PDP members and patriotic Nigerians to rally behind the emerging coalition and work towards building a viable alternative for national redemption.
