Amaechi: I’ll Serve Only One Term if Given ADC Presidential Ticket

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to serve only a single term in office if he secures the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amaechi made this declaration during an appearance on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, aired on Thursday.

Responding to a question on whether he would respect the principle of power rotation if nominated, the former Rivers State Governor affirmed that it remains an unwritten yet established convention in Nigeria’s political landscape.

His words: “Of course. Given the current structure of the country, one must adhere to the informal agreement that power should rotate—eight years for the North and eight years for the South.

“I was at the forefront of the fight against the PDP administration back then because there was an understanding that the government would serve for four years. However, when that government reneged on the agreement, I opposed it on grounds of fairness and stability.

“Any breach of such understanding risks provoking discontent—particularly from the North at that time. So, we supported a Northern candidate to maintain the balance of power.”

Amaechi concluded by stressing that the same principle must apply in 2027, stating that the South must be allowed to complete its turn.
