In a renewed effort to foster environmental awareness and sustainable practices among young people, the Kwara State Government will on Monday, July 21, 2025, launch a climate change initiative themed “Green Tomorrow: Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Kwara.”
The programme, spearheaded by Dr. Adetola Ariyike Salau, the Special Adviser on Education, Policy Formulation, and Human Capital Development to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is part of the broader STEAMUP Kwara initiative, which is a state-driven platform aimed at integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics into public education while addressing critical societal issues.
Scheduled to hold at Bishop Smith Memorial College, Admiralty Road, Ilorin, the event will feature the inauguration of a flagship Conservation Club and a symbolic tree planting ceremony, marking the formal launch of Kwara’s environmental sustainability campaign in secondary schools.
Dr. Salau, in a statement made available to newsmen, said the event is designed to “ignite a culture of climate responsibility among the youth and empower them as active participants in building a greener and more resilient Kwara.”
“Our vision is to build a generation that understands the urgency of climate action and takes deliberate steps toward protecting our environment. Through this programme, we are not only planting trees but planting ideas and values that can shape the future,” she added.
The event will also feature a keynote address by Festus Iyorah, Nigeria’s representative at Wild Africa, a pan-African environmental advocacy group. Lyorah is expected to inspire participating students and guests with insights into global best practices on conservation and youth engagement in climate-related initiatives.
The Climate Change Programme is one of several projects under the STEAMUP Kwara umbrella aimed at merging academic development with civic consciousness, positioning Kwara students as thought leaders and changemakers in the face of global challenges like climate change.
The event is slated to begin by 10:00 a.m. and will draw participants from across Kwara’s educational institutions, civil society organisations, and the environmental sector.
