The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disclosed ongoing efforts to woo former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, back into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing him as a “great political asset.”
Speaking on Arise News on Thursday, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, affirmed that the PDP remains keen on Obi’s return, acknowledging his political influence and electoral strength.
“Peter Obi is a product of the PDP, and we certainly want him back. He is an undeniable political capital for any party, and whoever has him stands to benefit tremendously,” Abdullahi stated.
He noted that despite alleged electoral malpractices during the 2023 presidential election, Obi — who defected to the Labour Party (LP) in the build-up to the polls — secured over six million votes, winning 12 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Had he not gone the way he did in the last election and still pulled such numbers amid rigging and manipulation, it shows the depth of his political value,” Abdullahi remarked.
Obi, the LP’s presidential flagbearer in 2023, had previously been the PDP’s vice presidential candidate in 2019 before exiting the party for the LP. He has since indicated his willingness to collaborate with the newly formed coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), though maintaining his LP membership.
Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, PDP’s presidential candidate in the last two election cycles, recently announced his resignation from the party — a move seen as part of a wider realignment within opposition ranks.
Atiku remains a key figure in the emerging coalition of political leaders seeking to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 through what they describe as a unified ballot revolution.
The PDP’s overtures to Obi underscore the high stakes and shifting alliances already shaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next presidential contest.
