The Labour Party’s factional National Secretary, Umar Farouk, has issued a stern warning that former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may forfeit the party’s 2027 ticket if he continues associating with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Farouk, in an interview with Trust TV on Wednesday, stated unequivocally that the party’s presidential ticket is not reserved for any individual, adding that Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the LP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, will be given a fair opportunity to vie for the top position.
“The seat of candidacy is not for any individual. It is open for a competitive contest,” he said. “Datti is as qualified to contest as Peter Obi. If he chooses to run, he will be free to buy the nomination form, mobilise support and seek election as our flagbearer.”
Farouk criticised Obi’s growing alignment with leaders of the ADC and warned that such moves may disqualify him from seeking the LP ticket.
“There’s no way you can continue to romance other political parties and then keep one leg in the Labour Party. No, from the outset, you may be disqualified,” he cautioned.
This development comes barely a week after Baba-Ahmed hinted at his readiness to contest the presidency in 2027 should Obi step aside. However, he was quick to affirm that his ambition remains conditional on Obi’s decision, maintaining his loyalty to the former Anambra governor.
“I am not desperate to be President,” Baba-Ahmed had said, “but Peter Obi deserves another chance on the LP platform.”
