At least 12 persons have lost their lives in a fatal auto crash involving an 18-seater passenger bus travelling from Ijebu Ode to Ibadan. The tragic incident occurred a few hours ago on the bridge shortly after Awa, in Ogun State.
According to reports, the vehicle plunged into a river, with preliminary findings suggesting overspeeding as the likely cause of the accident.
The incident was confirmed via the official Facebook page of Free World TV.
An eyewitness, speaking to Ijebu Rewa, disclosed that rescue efforts were hampered by the location and depth of the river, taking more than four hours to retrieve the victims from the submerged vehicle.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Ijebu Ode morgue, while efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and notify their families.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
