Suspected Herdsmen Kill Chief on Farmland In Ogun State

Panic and grief enveloped the community of Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State following a brutal night-time assault by suspected armed herdsmen on Friday.

The attack, which occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m., left many feared dead and at least 16 individuals injured, according to early reports received on Saturday morning. The actual number of fatalities remains unclear, as rescue and security teams continue recovery and assessment operations.

Security sources confirmed that personnel of the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) dispatched in response to a distress call were ambushed in Daudu, en route to the crisis zone. The ambush claimed the lives of two soldiers and one NSCDC officer.

“These brave men paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. Their courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten,” a local source lamented.

Survivors of the attack are currently receiving urgent medical attention at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi. Medical authorities at the hospital have issued an urgent appeal for blood donations to save the lives of the critically wounded.

Humanitarian organisations and well-meaning individuals have been called upon to support the victims with emergency medical supplies and assistance.

“My deepest sympathies go to the families affected by this senseless violence, especially our gallant men in uniform,” said a community leader who also urged restraint in the circulation of graphic visuals from the scene, citing respect for the victims and community sensitivities.

Authorities have yet to issue an official casualty figure as investigations and security operations are ongoing.
