The Russian Federation has reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Nigeria, signaling a renewed push to expand diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.
Speaking at a reception in Abuja on Wednesday to mark Russia Day, the country’s national holiday celebrated annually on June 12, Ambassador Andrey Podelyshev emphasized Russia’s enduring interest in deepening its engagement with Nigeria.
“Russia is dedicated to fostering a multipolar world order anchored in mutual respect, national sovereignty, and the unique cultural paths of all nations,” Podelyshev stated.
Reflecting on the longstanding relationship between Russia and Africa, particularly Nigeria, the envoy noted Moscow’s principled approach to diplomacy. “We do not impose conditions, interfere in internal affairs, or dictate models of governance. Instead, we champion sincere, equal partnerships built on mutual benefit,” he affirmed.
The ambassador highlighted Nigeria’s strategic role on the continent, not only as a regional leader but also as a nation with growing influence in humanitarian and educational collaboration. “Thousands of Nigerians have studied at Russian institutions, creating a strong foundation of trust and goodwill. This educational exchange continues to support cooperation in key sectors such as energy, defense, agriculture, and science,” he said.
Podelyshev praised the openness and constructive engagement of Nigerian counterparts, underscoring the importance of tangible results and shared goals. He expressed optimism about the trajectory of Russia-Nigeria relations: “We are confident that the potential for cooperation remains vast. There are new frontiers to explore, joint projects to pursue, and considerable opportunities for mutual growth.”
Russia Day commemorates the country’s path toward sovereignty and democratic reform. As the largest nation in the world, spanning two continents and 11 time zones, Russia remains a prominent global player known for its rich cultural heritage, geographical diversity, and historical significance.
