Co-founders of the Kudirat Adebisi Oyawoye Foundation, Ms. Fatima Oyawoye and Dr. Suliat Oyeronke Oyawoye, have donated essential medical supplies to the Esie Basic Health Centre in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
This was during the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen education and awareness about Sickle Cell.
The donation, made during the third day of the Foundation’s four-day sickle cell awareness campaign, included life-saving medications such as Amlodipine, Lisinopril, anti-malaria drugs, Septrin, Paracetamol, Diclofenac, topical creams, and Sickle Cell Test Kits.
In addition to the donation to the health centre, some medical items were also presented to the Elesie of Esie Kingdom, Oba Yakub Ibrahim Agboola (Egunjobi II), during a visit to his palace later in the evening.
The royal father, who praised the Oyawoye sisters for their dedication to healthcare advocacy, described the gesture as a reflection of their father’s legacy of service.
He noted that the late Professor Jamiu Mosobalaje Oyawoye, Nigeria and Africa’s first professor of geology, had always responded to the needs of the Esie community, including a notable personal donation of ₦100,000 some 30 years ago.
Following the outreach, the Foundation’s team conducted a thorough inspection of the Esie Basic Health Centre to assess the condition of the facility. Areas visited included the pharmacy, laboratory, file room, injection room, male and female wards, consulting room, and reception area.
During the assessment, the co-founders noted several infrastructural and equipment gaps within the facility and pledged to follow up with a support plan aimed at making the centre more functional and befitting for the community’s healthcare needs.
“Our visit here has revealed that while the staff are doing their best with what they have, the facility requires urgent upgrades to serve the people of Esie more effectively. We are committed to playing a role in making that happen,” Ms. Fatima Oyawoye stated.
The donation and assessment formed part of a larger outreach programme marking World Sickle Cell Day, with previous stops in Ijagbo and Ipee, both in Oyun LGA.
Ms. Fatima Oyawoye had earlier disclosed the Foundation has been holding campaigns for Sickle Cell Awareness since five years ago, and if will continue to focus on genotype awareness, free testing, stigma reduction, and access to quality healthcare across Kwara State.
