Members of the Offa X Community embarked on a captivating journey through Offa’s rich cultural and historical heritage on Monday as part of the Ileya Hangout 2.0.
The Hangout is an initiative designed to promote homecoming, cultural pride, and community networking.
The day’s activities commenced with a historic visit to the Olofa of Offaland’s Palace, where the group was received warmly and given a guided tour renowned historian, Musliyu Muhammed Lawal
The tour included a visit to the tombs of past Olofas, buried within the palace walls in accordance with age-long traditions.
“Past kings in Offa were buried inside the palace because it’s our traditional belief that they are part of us forever,” explained Alhaji Dauda Jimoh, the custodian of history at the palace, as he addressed the group during the tour.
Renowned historian, Musliyu Muhammed Lawal, served as the cultural compass of the day, enlightening participants on the customs, values, and ancient practices of the Offa people.
The historian also shared intriguing insights into the Gogo River, stating, “Gogo River happened as a result of a polygamous issue.”
He hammered on the importance of heritage in community identity and development.
The tour included visits to iconic landmarks, including the “Oyinbo Ẹ Ku Kalẹ” Railway Station site, a colonial-era location with deep historical significance, and the sacred Igi Ogun, both of which were explained in detail by Lawal, whose storytelling brought centuries of Offa history to life.
After the heritage tour, members of the Offa X Community converged at Prime Resorts, Offa, for an evening of fun, games and networking.
The resort provided a relaxed atmosphere for attendees to engage in games and conversations.
The hangout also featured an inspiring career and business talk segment, with insights from distinguished professionals:
Suraj Oyewale (Jarus), CEO of Jarus Homes & Investments Ltd, Chartered Accountant, and author, shared a session on career growth, personal development, and life decisions, drawing from his vast experience in finance and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Oyewole Abidemi of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) delivered an incisive talk on strategic business planning and entrepreneurship, providing practical guidance for young and aspiring business minds in the community.
