A tragic case of domestic violence has claimed the life of 24-year-old Hauwa Isah, a heavily pregnant woman who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Mohammed Sani, in the Limawa area of Minna, the Niger State capital.

The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Tuesday, June 3, 2025. According to eyewitnesses, distressing screams were heard from the couple’s residence, prompting neighbours to intervene. Sadly, by the time help arrived, Hauwa had already succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect, 31-year-old Mohammed Sani, has since been arrested by the police and is currently in custody at the A Division in Minna. He is being investigated for culpable homicide.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated:

“On 3rd June 2025, at about 10:30 p.m., a distress call was received indicating that one Hauwa Isah, 24, of Bani Hashimu Estate, Limawa ‘A’, Minna, was found lifeless with bloodstains in her room. She was rushed to the General Hospital in Minna, where she was confirmed dead. It was also confirmed that she was about nine months pregnant.”

He added that the suspect, Mohammed Sani, is believed to have committed the act following reports from neighbours about a pattern of physical abuse.

The victim’s father, in deep anguish, confirmed that this was not the first instance of abuse. “This is not the first time he laid hands on my daughter. We warned him several times, but he didn’t stop. Now he has killed her,” he said.

Community members have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for swift justice and stronger protections for women facing domestic abuse.

The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation.
