The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Minna Operations Office, has launched a strategic public awareness campaign aimed at reducing tanker-related accidents and fire outbreaks in Kwara State.
The campaign, titled Tanker Accident Prevention Kwara Campaign, was unveiled at Oloru Tanker Park in Moro Local Government Area. NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar—represented by Mr. Hussaini Isah, Head of Operations for Niger and Kwara States—described the initiative as a proactive safety intervention rather than a ceremonial event.
“This campaign is about shifting from a reactive to a preventive culture, promoting advocacy over silence, and building shared responsibility for public safety,” Umar emphasized.
The initiative seeks to increase awareness of the risks associated with tanker operations and strengthen emergency preparedness among stakeholders and local communities. It also aims to foster collaboration among relevant agencies, responders, and the public to prevent future disasters.
In support of the campaign, Mr. Moshood Mogaji, Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (KWASEMA), reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in averting crises. Alhaji Suleiman Abdulaziz, Vice Chairman of Moro LGA, commended NEMA for extending the campaign to the grassroots and raising awareness on the dangers of tanker mishaps.
The sensitization exercise featured emergency response demonstrations, including fire safety drills led by the Kwara State Fire Service and training by the Nigerian Red Cross Society. To ensure broad understanding, informational materials were distributed in English, Yoruba, and Nupe languages.
The campaign drew participation from key stakeholders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), and traditional leaders from host communities.
