A 27-year-old man, Ismail Ahmed, lost his life after being trapped in an abandoned mining pit while trying to take shelter from a downpour in Pangu Village, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident occurred on Saturday and was disclosed in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
According to the post, Ahmed had been washing clothes by a nearby stream when the rain began. In an attempt to stay dry, he sought refuge in a disused mining pit formerly used by illegal gold miners. However, the pit’s loose, rain-soaked soil gave way and collapsed, trapping him inside.
Local residents and family members rushed to the scene and managed to pull Ahmed from the debris. He was taken to the Kwali General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Makama further noted that the family declined an autopsy and proceeded with his burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
In the wake of the incident, local authorities and residents have renewed warnings to avoid abandoned mining sites and other hazardous areas, especially during the rainy season, to prevent similar tragedies.
