The Lagos State Government has unveiled the Eko Flavours Junior Edition, a youth-focused version of its flagship culinary competition aimed at nurturing the next generation of food innovators and professionals.
Speaking during a stakeholder dialogue on Friday, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, described the initiative as a strategic platform to promote education, creativity, and innovation within the food and agricultural sectors.
Themed “Flavours of the Future,” the event was held in Lagos and organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Culinara Group, and other partners.
Olusanya said the competition targets children aged 10 to 13 years and seeks to integrate culinary arts with agricultural education and food sustainability. “This platform is about much more than cooking. It is about unveiling the dreams and career paths of young minds while stimulating innovation in food preparation and presentation,” she said.
Online registration opens from June 16 to June 30. Participants must possess a valid Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) identification number.
Beyond showcasing culinary skills, Olusanya said the competition would offer young participants meaningful exposure to opportunities within the broader food systems. “Winners will receive cash prizes and other rewards, but more importantly, they will be immersed in a space that encourages creativity, resilience, and interest in the agricultural value chain,” she added.
Highlighting the state’s broader objectives, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Audu, said: “We are not only developing skills, we are also fostering intergenerational connections and laying the foundation for future food security through knowledge transfer.”
Project Lead, Mr. John Fadejola, provided details on the structure of the programme, noting that the grand finale is scheduled for July 26. “Our goal is to spotlight emerging culinary talent and showcase that agriculture extends beyond traditional farming—it is a space for creativity, technology, and innovation,” he said.
Fadejola emphasized that the initiative is part of Lagos State’s long-term investment in youth empowerment through dynamic and experiential learning platforms. “With the Eko Flavours Junior Edition, Lagos is positioning itself as a hub for food innovation while planting the seeds for a sustainable future where gastronomy and agriculture converge,” he added.
