The Lagos State Government has sealed a residential building at No. 59, Ajoke Okusanya Street, off Ago Palace Way, Okota, following the discovery of illegal sewage discharge into a public drainage channel.
The enforcement exercise, led by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, was carried out on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab confirmed the development via a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. He condemned the discharge of raw sewage into public drains, describing the act as a gross violation of environmental laws and a serious threat to public health.
“This act constitutes environmental pollution and a threat to public health,” Wahab stated, noting the risk such practices pose to water sources and the potential to trigger disease outbreaks.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strict enforcement of environmental regulations and vowed that violators would face appropriate sanctions.
The incident attracted public attention after a concerned resident shared a video on X, showing raw sewage being discharged from the property into a nearby gutter through a hose. The video in which Wahab was tagged prompted immediate government intervention.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions and called on residents to report similar violations to safeguard public health and maintain urban sanitation standards.
