The traditional ruler of Oreke-Okegbo in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Sunday Adefila, has challenged the accuracy of the police report concerning the killing of two mobile police officers and the abduction of two others—identified as a Chinese national and a Nigerian miner—by gunmen at a mining site on Wednesday.
In a telephone interview with DAILY POST on Saturday, Oba Adefila stated that the incident did not occur in Oreke-Okegbo, as claimed by the police, but in a neighbouring community, Oreke-Oke.
“There is no mining operation in Oreke-Okegbo,” said Adefila, a former General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA). “The attack happened in Oreke-Oke. People often confuse the two because they share similar names, but they are distinct communities.”
According to reports, the attackers killed two officers, seized their rifles, and abducted two others. The kidnappers are reportedly demanding a ransom of ₦1 billion for the release of the captives.
Oba Adefila expressed frustration over the misinformation, saying, “What is going on in this country? The incident was not in my domain. I am the Kabiyesi of Oreke-Okegbo, and I want to categorically debunk the claim. There is no mining site here.”
He urged the police command to correct its statement, emphasizing the damage it has caused to his community’s reputation. “Since the report went viral, I’ve been overwhelmed with calls from within and outside the country,” he said.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on Sunday were unsuccessful.
