The Kano State Government has called on the Federal Government to provide compensation for the cancellation of Durbar celebrations in the state for two consecutive years.
The demand was made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Uthman, on Sunday during the traditional Sallah homage paid by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House.
Uthman noted that the suspension of the annual cultural event has caused significant financial losses for the state, emphasizing that the Durbar, recognized by UNESCO as a heritage event, draws both local and international tourists and generates substantial revenue.
He stressed that the economic implications of the cancellations have been severe enough to impact the state’s annual budget.
“The Federal Government must take responsibility for the economic fallout of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly,” he said.
Uthman also described the suspension as unfortunate and urged the immediate resumption of the Durbar celebrations, insisting it was time the state sought reparations for the losses suffered.
