President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday, June 12, confer national honours on select members of the National Assembly as part of events marking Democracy Day.
According to a statement by the House of Representatives Spokesman, Akin Rotimi Jr., the President will attend a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly as the special guest of honour. He is also expected to address lawmakers during the session.
“The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by Mr President,” Rotimi Jr. stated.
This year’s Democracy Day celebration is themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rotimi described the joint sitting as a landmark event, highlighting the National Assembly’s role in upholding democratic principles, promoting accountability, and driving national development since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
He called on Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to building a more inclusive, united, and prosperous nation.
