As Nigerians mark this year’s Democracy Day, Ogbeni Seun Ogunniyi, the Honourable Member representing Ojomu/Balogun Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, has called on citizens to reflect deeply on the core values of democracy and commit to building a nation that works for all.
In a message commemorating June 12, Ogunniyi emphasized that democracy transcends the periodic conduct of elections.
According to him, it is rooted in the entrenchment of strong institutions, inclusive governance, participatory leadership, equity, justice, accountability, and an unwavering respect for fundamental human rights.
“Democracy is not just about holding elections on periodic intervals. It is about entrenching strong institutional values, inclusion, participation, accountability, equity, justice, and respect for the principles of fundamental human rights,” Ogunniyi stated.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the lawmaker encouraged Nigerians to draw strength from the struggles and sacrifices of past and present heroes, urging a renewed commitment to a united, prosperous, and inclusive country.
“Let us preserve the memories and legacies of our past and present heroes. Let us all, as fellow compatriots and responsible citizens, stand to be counted as builders of a nation where no man is oppressed… so that with peace and plenty, Nigeria may be blessed,” he added.
Ogunniyi concluded his message with a rallying call for hope and unity, noting that regardless of ethnicity, social class, or religious background, every Nigerian deserves an opportunity to flourish in a just society.
“Let us renew our hope in a country that works for all, where everyone, irrespective of tribe, class, or religion, can be assured of flourishing and prospering.”
He wished all Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day, encouraging them to remain active participants in the nation’s democratic journey.
June 12 is officially recognized as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election, which is widely considered the freest and fairest in the nation’s history.
It stands as a symbol of the country’s ongoing commitment to democratic ideals.
