The Federal Government has debunked widespread social media claims suggesting that Nigerian citizens have been abandoned in Iran amid escalating tensions in the region.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement released Saturday in Abuja by Ministry spokesperson Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, described the reports as “misleading, untruthful, and baseless.”
Tuggar reaffirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran remains operational and fully committed to the safety and welfare of Nigerians residing in Iran.
Contrary to rumours of a complete shutdown, the Minister clarified that while routine embassy activities have been affected by security threats and ongoing bombings in Tehran, embassy staff continue to provide support remotely.
He also revealed that the Nigerian government is engaging with Armenian authorities to explore possible evacuation routes through Yerevan should the crisis escalate further.
The Ministry advised Nigerian nationals in Iran to stay connected with designated community coordinators, monitor verified updates via the Iranian messaging app Eitaa, and reach out to the embassy through the official emergency contact numbers and emails provided.
“The Ministry remains alert and is closely monitoring developments. All necessary measures will be taken to ensure the protection and well-being of Nigerians abroad,” the statement concluded.
