A Nigerian citizen has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate President Bola Tinubu’s administration over a controversial budget allocation that allegedly earmarks ₦266.25 million for a single streetlight.
The allegation was raised on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by user @Ode_Luwa, who questioned the rationale behind the reported ₦393.2 billion budgeted for just 1,477 streetlights — averaging ₦266.25 million per unit.
“Dear @officialEFCC, your attention is greatly needed here. How can President Tinubu’s administration budget ₦393.2 billion for just 1,477 streetlights? This amount is enough to build a massive streetlight factory and solve Nigeria’s streetlight problems permanently,” the user wrote.
Further raising alarm, the post also pointed to another budget line of ₦114.53 billion for 538 boreholes — which translates to about ₦211 million per borehole — describing it as “completely ridiculous.”
As the post gained traction, it sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians online, with many demanding accountability and transparency from the federal government.
