A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok content creator, Abubakar Usman Kilina, to one year imprisonment for publishing content deemed indecent and offensive.
The judgement, delivered by Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan of Court No. 21, followed Kilina’s conviction on charges of promoting immoral behavior, featuring cross-dressers, and using vulgar language in a viral TikTok video.
The court granted the convict an option of a ₦100,000 fine in lieu of the prison term and further ordered him to pay ₦30,000 in compensation to the Kano State Film and Video Censorship Board, citing the agency’s time and resources expended during the prosecution.
The case was instituted by the Kano State Film Censorship Board, which accused Kilina of breaching the state’s moral standards through his digital content.
In her ruling, Magistrate Hadiza issued a stern warning to Kilina, cautioning him against future infractions. She emphasized that any repeat offense would attract the maximum penalty without the option of a fine.
