Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that the lingering political crisis in Rivers State will be decisively addressed by the National Assembly.
Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning of the Kugbo Taxi and Bus Terminal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Akpabio emphasised the legislature’s commitment to restoring political stability and fostering reconciliation among the warring factions in the state.
He noted that the National Assembly is actively engaging relevant stakeholders to identify the root causes of the conflict and implement measures that will guarantee lasting peace and sustainable development in Rivers.
“We are determined to restore normalcy in Rivers State. The National Assembly will collaborate with all concerned parties to ensure enduring peace and stability for the benefit of the people,” Akpabio stated.
The political impasse in Rivers escalated three months ago, culminating in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature. President Bola Tinubu subsequently declared a six-month suspension for Fubara and announced a state of emergency.
Since then, efforts at reconciliation have gained traction, with Governor Fubara meeting with President Tinubu and the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike—his estranged political mentor.
Wike, who has recently signalled a willingness to reconcile, has called on Fubara to engage other aggrieved stakeholders to achieve a comprehensive resolution.
