A 22-year-old woman, Miss Zainab Muhamadu, is scheduled to appear before a Sharia Court in Zamfara State this Friday, following allegations that she converted from Islam to Christianity.
According to Sahara Reporters, sources within her family claim Zainab’s only “offense” was embracing the Christian faith. Her spiritual journey reportedly began after she encountered Pastor Samuel, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in her community. The two developed a connection, during which Samuel shared his faith, leading to Zainab’s conversion.
Her decision, however, drew the attention of local authorities, resulting in her arrest and prosecution under Islamic law.
The development has sparked outrage among human rights groups and legal experts, who describe it as a direct affront to Nigeria’s constitutionally guaranteed right to religious freedom.
“This isn’t just about Zainab,” said a human rights lawyer based in Adamawa. “It’s about whether Nigeria will defend the fundamental right of every citizen to choose their faith without fear.”
Concerns have also been raised over the fairness of the upcoming trial, with urgent calls for national and international intervention. Christian communities across Nigeria are reportedly mobilizing in prayer and advocacy.
Meanwhile, Zainab’s legal team is said to be exploring the possibility of transferring her case to a secular court, arguing that she should not be tried under Islamic law given her current faith.
