The Lagos State Police Command has responded to a viral video circulating on social media, showing a large group of young men gathered in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos after reportedly arriving from Katsina State.
The video sparked security concerns among Lagos residents, prompting calls for a police investigation into the men’s presence.
In a statement released on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that 89 young men had indeed travelled from Katsina State to work as labourers at the Dangote Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki.
According to Hundeyin, the police were alerted to the situation on May 14, 2025, and officers were swiftly deployed to the scene to investigate.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the young men, 89 in number, were recruited to work as labourers at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki,” Hundeyin said.
The police spokesperson added that a contractor working with the refinery appeared before the police to confirm that he had personally sourced and transported the labourers from Katsina for legitimate employment. His statement was corroborated by the refinery’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), who affirmed that the men had been verified, cleared for entry, and would be residing at the facility.
Hundeyin noted that the individuals were thoroughly searched, and no incriminating items were found. He added that each labourer provided proper identification and presented their National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were duly verified.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could incite panic. He assured residents that the Command remains dedicated to maintaining law and order across the state and will continue to act swiftly on matters of public safety.
