The National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi, has called for the resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, over errors in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Adeyemi made the demand in a Facebook post on Wednesday, following Oloyede’s emotional apology during a press briefing in Abuja. The JAMB Registrar, who broke down in tears, admitted responsibility for the examination errors and announced that 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres in the Owerri Zone—covering five states in the South East—would have to retake the exam.
Despite the apology, Adeyemi insisted that Oloyede’s public display of remorse was insufficient to address the damage caused by JAMB’s oversight. He cited the tragic case of Timilehin Faith Opesusi, a 19-year-old candidate who reportedly died by suicide after receiving a low UTME score.
“JAMB Registrar’s tears and apology can’t redeem the lost soul of our student who committed suicide, the Ogbomosho fatal accident, and the girl who went missing for two days,” Adeyemi stated.
He added, “He should accept fate and leave while the ovation is still loud. This is not a technical error without human input.”
The NANS PRO acknowledged Oloyede’s willingness to take responsibility but argued that genuine accountability requires more than just words.
“We can commend him later for owning up and taking full responsibility after all promises and corrections are successfully made,” he noted.
Adeyemi also criticized Oloyede’s speech for failing to acknowledge the families who suffered losses during the UTME period, stating that “no single paragraph” was dedicated to commiserating with the affected families.
