Two co-wives from Dakwa community in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), were reportedly hospitalised after consuming a herbal mixture intended to enhance their husband’s sexual desire. The man, Musa Muhammad, had recently married a third wife from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The herbal concoction, known locally as kayan mata, is believed to boost sexual arousal in men. According to Daily Trust, the women—whose names were withheld—took the mixture three days after their husband brought home his new bride.
Muhammad confirmed that his wives were rushed to a clinic in Madalla, Niger State, where doctors discovered organ damage allegedly linked to the herbal drink. Both women underwent surgery and were discharged after a week of treatment.
Muhammad explained that the herbal mixture was usually supplied by a local herbalist in liquid form, but this time, she provided it in powdered form, which they mixed with milk before consumption.
“I was called from my main house that my two wives were unwell. I had spent the night at the house of my new bride,” he recounted. “When I arrived, I found them writhing in pain. I called a nurse from the community, but when there was no improvement, I rushed them to the clinic where they were treated and eventually discharged.”
Efforts are currently underway to locate the herbalist for questioning to prevent similar incidents.
Medical experts are also raising alarms. Dr. Taiye Anifowose, a gynaecologist, warned women against using such herbs, citing risks of severe organ damage and long-term effects on the reproductive system. She urged government agencies and community leaders to educate women on the dangers of unverified herbal remedies.
