President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the importance of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s development, calling for their increased involvement in the implementation of policies aimed at improving citizens’ livelihoods.
Tinubu made this statement on Friday while receiving the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Abdulhakeem Owoade I, his wife Abiwumi, and a delegation of Oyo State traditional rulers at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement that President Tinubu congratulated the Alaafin on his ascension to the historic throne, pledging his prayers and support. “Your rise to the throne is not only historic but also divinely ordained,” Tinubu said, highlighting the Alaafin’s humility and commitment to preserving Yoruba culture and traditions.
Tinubu further noted that the challenges and processes leading to Oba Owoade’s coronation were part of divine preparation, commending the Oyo traditional council for the smooth nomination and crowning of the 46th Alaafin after the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi on April 22, 2022.
“I am pleased with your character, discipline, and the way you have upheld the values and culture of your people, even during your time in Canada,” Tinubu remarked. “You represent hope for sustaining the Yoruba race.”
A Call for Traditional Engagement in Governance
President Tinubu emphasized the need for closer cooperation between traditional institutions and the federal government, stating that peace and stability require inclusivity.
“This is not a journey that one person can take alone. We must come together to build a prosperous nation,” Tinubu said. He reiterated his administration’s focus on education and healthcare, inviting traditional leaders to participate actively in driving these goals.
Tinubu also praised Oyo natives serving in his administration, including Ambassador Victor Adeleke, the State Chief of Protocol, and Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, his Aide-de-Camp, who is the king-designate of Ilemonaland in Oyun Local Council, Kwara State—a community with deep Oyo roots.
Alaafin of Oyo Pledges Support
In his response, Oba Owoade expressed his appreciation for the President’s warm reception, describing it as a testament to Tinubu’s character and respect for traditional institutions.
“Your hospitality is not just a formality; it speaks to your statesmanship and enduring respect for our heritage,” the Alaafin said. He praised Tinubu’s political journey, noting his legacy as an activist, strategist, and now as Nigeria’s leader.
The monarch assured the President of the traditional council’s support in delivering his mandate, highlighting the role of traditional wisdom in national development.
“National transformation is a partnership between ancient wisdom and modern governance. When both work together, true progress is achieved,” Oba Owoade added, commending Tinubu’s efforts in economic reform, infrastructural development, youth empowerment, and agricultural investments.
He concluded by affirming Oyo’s readiness to collaborate with the federal government, saying, “Oyo is ready, Yoruba are ready, and Nigerians are ready for progress under your leadership.”
