President Bola Tinubu is set to inaugurate the National Disaster Relief Fund Committee on Tuesday at the Council Chambers of the State House.
The committee, chaired by Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, is tasked with creating a robust national framework for disaster response and climate resilience across Nigeria.
Designed to enhance the country’s emergency preparedness, the fund will draw participation from both public and private sector stakeholders. It aims to serve as a centralized hub for the federal government’s disaster management resources, working alongside existing emergency management agencies.
Last September, during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, President Tinubu approved Elumelu’s appointment as Chairman of the National Disaster Fund, representing the private sector’s involvement in national disaster management.
The high-level committee will also feature key government figures, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Minister of Aviation, the Minister of Water Resources, the Minister of Environment, and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
