President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected in Ogun State in the coming weeks to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for what has been described as the world’s largest cotton and polyester processing factory.
Governor Dapo Abiodun made the announcement while receiving the former Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, and members of the Iperu Development Association at his office in Abeokuta.
The facility, which will be located at the Special Agro Processing Zone near the Gateway International Airport in the Iperu/Ilisan area, is being developed under the “Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative.” According to the governor, the factory will occupy 400 hectares and is projected to provide employment for up to 250,000 people daily.
“In the next 30 to 45 days, President Tinubu will perform the groundbreaking of this initiative. It will be the largest cotton and polyester processing facility in the world,” Abiodun said. “The promoters chose this location due to its existing infrastructure, including the airport, proximity to markets, and access to raw materials.”
Governor Abiodun added that the state has already commenced site clearance, noting that the project is expected to have a transformational economic impact across Iperu, Remoland, Ijebuland, and the entire state.
The governor also revealed that the Nigerian Air Force has expressed interest in establishing a base in Iperu to provide security for the airport and surrounding communities.
Providing further context on the strategic location of the airport, Abiodun explained that Iperu lies at the geographic centre of Ogun State, making it accessible from all parts of the state. He also disclosed that 100 housing units at the Airport Housing Estate are ready for commissioning.
Abiodun used the occasion to commend Mrs Madein for her service to the nation, describing her as a model public servant. “You have brought pride to Ogun State through your meritorious service and your commitment to community development,” he said, citing projects she facilitated in Iperu, including a women’s empowerment centre, a mini stadium, and erosion control infrastructure.
Mrs Madein, in her remarks, thanked the governor for his support and for creating a business-friendly environment that has attracted significant investment to the state. She said her visit was aimed at reporting on her stewardship and reaffirming her commitment to the development of Ogun State.
“I am here to express my gratitude and to assure you that I have represented our state to the best of my ability at the national level,” she said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Iperu Development Association, Otunba Taiwo Oyebanjo, lauded the impact of the Abiodun administration on Iperu, saying it has greatly improved the town’s socio-economic status.
The Ebi of Idena, Oba Lukman Salami, described the transformation of Iperu under the current administration as historic, noting that the town had evolved from a rural community into a modern hub with critical infrastructure.
