A Nigerian university student, Adesanya Oluwatumilara, has come under intense criticism after being accused of faking his mother’s death in a scheme to fraudulently solicit money from his schoolmates.
The controversy erupted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where multiple users alleged that Oluwatumilara circulated a fabricated obituary and claimed to be mourning the loss of his mother. The emotional appeal reportedly led classmates and acquaintances to contribute substantial amounts of money in sympathy.
However, the story quickly unraveled after a video emerged showing the student celebrating in a nightclub—dancing exuberantly and spraying cash—barely days after the supposed bereavement. This raised suspicions and triggered a wave of outrage across social media.
“He’s a disgrace for faking his mother’s death just to scam his coursemates,” one user wrote, sharing a photo of the accused. “He has also lied about scholarships to collect money from people. Don’t trust him—he lies without shame.”
Social media reactions have been swift and scathing, with many expressing disbelief and disappointment. One user warned, “Make the parents file a restraining order, or else this boy go ki them for real. Person wey don do obituary already.”
