The Nigerian and UK nursing communities are reeling with grief after the sudden death of a Nigerian nurse, Nnena Miriam, whose lifeless body was discovered in her Leeds apartment.
Miriam, a dedicated healthcare professional, had recently returned to the United Kingdom following her introduction ceremony in Nigeria, in preparation for her traditional marriage. She was last seen at work on Sunday of the previous week.
Concern grew when Miriam failed to report for duty and did not respond to calls or messages. A close friend, alarmed by her unusual silence, filed a missing person report. Authorities later discovered her body in her residence, according to a statement from Fellow Nurses Africa, a professional organisation advocating for African nurses.
“It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we report the sudden passing of one of our own,” the organisation stated. “Nurse Miriam was found dead in her room earlier this week under heartbreaking circumstances.”
Tuesday, April 29, was meant to mark a joyous chapter in Miriam’s life — her traditional wedding day. Instead, her sudden death has left loved ones grappling with unanswered questions and profound sorrow.
Colleagues described Miriam as a kind, resilient nurse who served with passion and compassion. “Her untimely passing is a profound loss to the healthcare family she served with pride and to the many patients whose lives she touched,” the statement added.
Investigations into the cause of her death are ongoing.
This tragedy echoes a similar incident from March 2024, when Chidimma Ezenyili, another Nigerian caregiver in the UK, collapsed while attending to an elderly client. She passed away two days later.
