The Deputy Senate Leader and Senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Architect Lola Ashiru, has kicked off a large-scale acquisition training and empowerment programme targeted at artisans across the zone.
The programme commenced simultaneously at OMDA Hall (behind Freedom Hotel) and MC Hall in Emiola area, both in Offa, Kwara State.
It is aimed at building capacity and providing startup support for artisans including mechanics, tailors, barbers, hairdressers, and other skilled tradesmen and women.
The training is being facilitated by Senator Ashiru in partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and Ambidextrous General Contracting Ltd.
Speaking during the opening session, the Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara South, Alhaja Mujidat Amototo, charged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity.
She warned against the temptation to sell the equipment that will be provided to them after the training, noting that the empowerment is designed to lift them out of poverty and make them self-reliant.
Mrs. Sunmonu Ganiyat Olajumoke, a representative of SMEDAN, also addressed the trainees.
She explained that beyond the training, the agency would carry out post-empowerment assessments to evaluate the progress of the beneficiaries and ensure the programme’s objectives are being met.
“This is not just about giving out tools. We are keen on follow-ups to make sure you are using them productively and are on your way to becoming economically independent,” she concluded.
Engr. Femi Muhammed, a consultant from Ambidextrous General Contracting Ltd, similarly urged participants to take the training seriously, stressing that the initiative is a rare opportunity to access knowledge and resources that can transform their businesses.
Other dignitaries at the event included Alhaji Omotosho Yunus, Senior Legislative Aide to the President of the Senate in Offa LG; and Mr. Olayemi Olaboye (popularly known as Itafa), the Senator’s Special Adviser on Administration, who spoke on behalf of Senator Ashiru.
It would be recalled that Senator Lola Ashiru, while announcing the programme, had earlier stated via his verified Facebook page that the initiative was part of a broader commitment to tackle unemployment and promote economic development in Kwara South through skill acquisition and empowerment.
The programme continues this week with additional phases expected to cover more sectors and beneficiaries across the senatorial district.
