Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has charged lawmakers to rise to the expectations of Nigerians with unity, integrity, and decisive legislative action.
Speaking at the resumption of plenary yesterday, Akpabio urged his colleagues to be guided by patriotism, noting that much had transpired during the National Assembly’s recess.
“The rising cost of living, instability in the energy sector, and persistent insecurity demand not just attention but decisive legislative action,” he said.
Akpabio called for support for President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address the nation’s challenges, adding, “In the South-East and North-West, communities still battle terrorism. In the North-Central, farmers and herders seek protection. And in the South-South, issues of environmental justice remain unresolved. These are not just headlines; they are the bleeding wounds of the republic.”
He urged lawmakers to move beyond rhetoric: “Our people look up to us for rescue. I believe there is no river we cannot cross if we trust in God and in the leadership He has ordained.”
On electoral and judicial reforms, Akpabio stressed the urgency of institutional accountability. “These are not idle conversations; they are the heartbeat of our democratic future. We are under watch—by the people, the world, and history itself. No test must find us wanting.”
Akpabio declared that the legislative agenda for this session is “solemn and historic,” with a focus on security reform, economic resilience, education, technology, and youth empowerment. He called for “statesmanship over partisanship,” urging lawmakers to elevate debate and foster unity.
The Senate, he assured, remains committed to the hopes and hardships of Nigerians: “We are here, refreshed in spirit and renewed in resolve, to build a nation where peace is not an illusion, and progress is not just a promise.”
Meanwhile, the Senate will today begin consideration of the controversial Tax Reform Bills, first introduced by President Tinubu months ago. Senate Committee on Finance Chairman, Sani Musa, laid the report, with Akpabio urging members to study the bill ahead of its consideration.
Akpabio also emphasized the need for rigorous oversight of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to ensure efficiency and transparency.
“Your Senate is back at work. We have not forgotten your hopes, your hardships, or your hunger for change,” he concluded.
