The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new president.
Piwuna succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State. His election was confirmed during the 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin on Sunday.
In a keenly contested race, Piwuna defeated Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, to secure the presidency of the union.
Piwuna’s emergence comes at a critical time for ASUU, as rumors of impending industrial action swirl over unresolved issues, including the sharing formula for the recently released earned Academic Allowances by the Federal Government, brain drain, and other longstanding grievances.
It would be recalled that on April 23, 2025, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved N50 billion to clear unpaid allowances for university workers.
