A Nigerian man who recently returned from abroad has accused the United Bank for Africa (UBA) of unlawfully clearing N150 million from his account, allegedly on the basis that he was declared dead.
The startling claim was made during a live video conversation with human rights advocate Gwamnishu Harrison, who has pledged to pursue legal action on the returnee’s behalf.
According to the man—whose identity remains undisclosed—the incident occurred in 2023 while he was residing outside the country. He stated that despite living abroad, he consistently deposited funds into his UBA account, sometimes as many as five times annually.
Upon his return to Nigeria, however, he was shocked to learn that his account had been emptied. Bank officials allegedly informed him that individuals had accessed his funds by falsely claiming he was deceased and had already been buried.
The returnee further alleged that when he visited the bank to demand an explanation, security operatives were already on standby to arrest him. He said his only offense was raising his voice in disbelief and frustration over the situation.
Harrison, in response, described the case as a gross violation and has vowed to hold the bank accountable through legal channels.
As of the time of publication, UBA has not issued an official response to the allegation.
