The Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, presided over by Justice Hannah Ajayi, has granted approval for the burial of the dismembered remains of Hafsor Lawal, a 24-year-old victim of a suspected ritual killing in Ilorin. The burial is to be conducted according to Islamic rites.
The decision followed an application made on Monday by the Kwara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Senior Ibrahim, during the resumed accelerated hearing of the case. The application came shortly after the court admitted Lawal’s remains as an exhibit.
Abdulrahman Bello and four others are currently standing trial on charges of conspiracy and murder related to Lawal’s death.
During Monday’s session, three additional witnesses testified, including two police officers and Dr. Olaleke Folaranmi, a consultant anatomic pathologist from the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The court also examined recovered body parts, with video evidence presented, evoking strong emotions among attendees.
Sergeant Moses, an investigative police officer, recounted how Hafsor Lawal’s phone was traced to the first defendant, Abdulrahman Bello, who allegedly attempted to bribe him during the investigation. He further revealed that parts of Lawal’s body were discovered in Bello’s apartment, while others were found at a public dump site.
Justice Ajayi approved the oral application by the prosecution for the burial of the remains. So far, seven witnesses have testified in the ongoing trial, which has been adjourned until May 21, 2025.
