Gunmen suspected to be members of the infamous Lakurawa gang stormed Zagami village in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Sunday, abducting several worshippers during a church service.
Sources revealed that the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, invaded the church during morning worship, firing indiscriminately and spreading panic before seizing an undisclosed number of congregants and fleeing into the nearby forest.
Eyewitness Ezekiel Danjuma, who narrowly escaped the assault, recounted the ordeal to DAILY POST, stating that the gunmen came in large numbers, encircling the church before launching their attack.
“It was terrifying. They came shooting and forced their way into the church. Some of us managed to escape through the back, but they took many people with them,” Danjuma said.
The incident has plunged Zagami—a serene farming community in the Kebbi South Senatorial District—into fear and mourning. The district includes seven local government areas: Danko/Wasagu, Fakai, Ngaski, Sakaba, Shanga, Yauri, and Zuru.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities had yet to release an official statement regarding the attack.
Residents, however, are urging the Kebbi State Government and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and bolster security measures in the region to prevent future occurrences.
