The Federation of Ibadan Students Union (FIBSU) has strongly condemned the killing of a student who was reportedly struck by a stray bullet fired by a police officer in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The victim, a candidate in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), was on his way to write an exam when he was fatally shot—an incident FIBSU described as tragic, avoidable, and utterly senseless.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, FIBSU President-Elect, Comrade Giwa Kamorudeen Olawale, decried the incident as a reflection of the recurring recklessness and disregard for human life by elements within the Nigerian Police Force.
“That a young student, full of dreams and hope, could be killed en route to his exam hall is more than unacceptable—it is a national tragedy,” Kamorudeen stated. “There is absolutely no justification for the use of live ammunition in civilian areas, especially near schools or exam centres. The right to life must be upheld at all times.”
In response to the incident, FIBSU issued the following demands:
1. Immediate identification and arrest of the officer involved.
2. A transparent and thorough investigation, with public disclosure of findings.
3. Swift and decisive prosecution of the culprit under the law.
4. Adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
5. Urgent police reforms, including improved training on civilian engagement and rules of engagement.
The union further urged the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, the Inspector General of Police, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, and human rights organisations to take immediate action to ensure justice and curb the rising tide of police brutality across the country.
“The hopes of countless young Nigerians are being crushed by these repeated acts of violence. We demand accountability. We demand justice—now,” Kamorudeen added.
