The Federal Government has unveiled plans to sell 753 residential properties forfeited by former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The estate—comprising duplexes and apartments located in Abuja’s Cadastral Zone—was officially transferred to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday.
These units were seized by the EFCC as part of an ongoing corruption probe into Emefiele. A High Court in Apo, Federal Capital Territory, had earlier granted interim and final forfeiture orders and dismissed Emefiele’s attempt to reclaim the property in December 2024.
EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, described the handover as a tangible outcome of Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive.
“This handover is a demonstration of the impact of the fight against financial crimes and corruption,” Olukoyede said during the ceremony.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, announced that the estate will be sold through a transparent and competitive process.
“Today, I had the honour of receiving 753 duplexes and other apartments located in the Cadastral Zone of the FCT, forfeited by the former CBN Governor, from the EFCC,” Dangiwa said.
He explained that the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to repurpose recovered assets for public benefit. He added that the Ministry will assess the structural integrity of the buildings and complete any outstanding infrastructure, such as roads and drainage, before putting the units up for sale.
Dangiwa also revealed that a standardised housing design framework will be introduced to maintain architectural consistency and guide future homeowners.
“The housing units will be sold via the Renewed Hope Portal in a widely advertised, open, and accountable process,” he stated.
He concluded by highlighting the broader goal of turning recovered assets into tangible benefits for Nigerians, saying, “Together with the EFCC, we aim to show that the fight against corruption can deliver real value—transforming looted assets into homes for our people.”
