Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced that the state government has completed all necessary processes to purchase excess power from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to boost electricity supply in Umuahia, the state capital.
Otti disclosed this yesterday at Geometric Power, Aba, during a reception held in honour of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who commissioned Geometric Power’s new 2×15 MVA Ogbor Hill Sub-Station on Monday.
The governor revealed that by May 6, the state would make an official offer to EEDC for the acquisition of the Umuahia Ringed Fence, which would guarantee steady power supply for the eight local councils currently not covered by Geometric Power.
“We have done all the due diligence and evaluations. By Tuesday, May 6, 2025, we will be making an offer to EEDC,” Otti said.
He directed the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities to initiate discussions with Geometric Power’s management for the wheeling of EEDC’s excess power to the Umuahia Ringed Fence.
According to Otti, with all 11 Geometric sub-stations operational and nine local councils connected, Abia State would have access to over 80 megawatts of excess power.
“Ordinarily, that excess power would be injected into the national grid, but with deregulation, our discussion with Geometric Power is focused on wheeling that 80 or 88 megawatts—or any excess—directly into the Umuahia Ringed Fence. Once we are in control, that excess power will go straight to Umuahia,” he explained.
