The United States government has prohibited its employees in China from engaging in romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.

According to the Associated Press, former US Ambassador Nicholas Burns introduced the policy before leaving his position.

The rule was first tested in the summer of 2024, restricting US government employees in China from having intimate relationships with Chinese citizens working as support staff or guards at five consulates and the US embassy.

In January, the policy was officially communicated to American government personnel stationed in China.

Employees who violate the directive will be required to leave the country. However, the restriction does not apply to US government staff stationed outside of China.
