Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to provide full compensation to the families of the 16 hunters killed in Uromi, assuring them of his unwavering support in their time of grief.
Accompanied by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other high-ranking officials, Okpebholo visited Torankawa in Bunkure Local Government Area to offer condolences. During the visit, he also announced additional support for the bereaved families, including financial aid and food supplies.
Expressing outrage over the tragic killings, the governor, visibly angered, vowed that justice would be served.
“This heinous act will not go unpunished. We will ensure those responsible face the full weight of the law,” he declared.
Meanwhile, hundreds of family members and supporters staged a peaceful protest, demanding justice. Carrying placards with messages such as “Hunters are not criminals,” “We demand justice for our people,” and “Swift action must be taken,” they marched along the road leading to Torankawa village.
Many hunters, armed with their hunting weapons, joined the demonstration, calling for an end to violence against their community. Other placards read, “Killings in the North must stop,” “Northerners are peace-loving citizens,” and “Justice must prevail.”
As the governor’s convoy passed, some agitated hunters chanted war songs while brandishing their weapons, though local residents worked to maintain calm throughout the protest.
