The United States on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the deadly nightclub collapse in the Dominican Republic that claimed at least 125 lives, including a provincial governor and a former Major League Baseball player.
The tragedy unfolded early Tuesday morning when the roof of the popular Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo suddenly caved in. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, as rescue operations continue into their second day.
Among the victims were Nelsy Cruz, governor of the northern Monte Cristi province, and former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that at least one U.S. citizen and one legal resident were among the dead.
“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating event,” Rubio said. “The U.S. stands ready to support our Dominican allies during this difficult time.”
Rescue teams continue to search for survivors in the rubble, holding out hope amid a national tragedy that has shaken the Caribbean nation and drawn international condolences.
