U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to boycott the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, citing allegations of anti-white violence and land seizures.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump reiterated discredited claims that white farmers in South Africa are being subjected to a government-backed campaign of violence and land confiscation.
“Is this where we want to be for the G20? I don’t think so!” Trump wrote, referencing the summit scheduled for November.
South Africa currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20 group of major economies and is set to host the annual leaders’ summit later this year.
Tensions between Washington and Pretoria have escalated during Trump’s presidency, fueled by repeated accusations from his administration that South Africa is enacting anti-white policies.
When asked about Trump’s remarks, a spokesperson for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said they were no longer expecting Trump to attend the summit.
Trump’s post included video clips of Julius Malema, leader of the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), speaking about land expropriation and referencing violence as a revolutionary tactic. The EFF responded angrily, accusing Trump of using their statements as a pretext to avoid international accountability.
“It is clear that he fears facing his counterparts following his humiliating tariff stunt,” the party said, referring to Trump’s recent imposition of tariffs on several countries. They also accused him of committing “economic genocide.”
The South African government denied the allegations, saying there is no plan to seize land and dismissing Trump’s “white genocide” claims as conspiracy theories propagated by far-right groups.
Earlier this year, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also skipped a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in South Africa, citing what he called an “anti-American agenda.”
