A tragic accident claimed the lives of three people over the weekend in Akure, the Ondo State capital, following a collision between a commercial tricycle and a truck.
The incident occurred at the Itagbanja axis of Oke-Aro, along Idanre Road in Akure South Local Government Area. Among the victims were a couple, whose identities were yet to be confirmed as of press time.
Eyewitnesses blamed the accident on reckless driving by both the tricyclist and the truck driver. Two of the victims reportedly died on the spot, while the third succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
The crash triggered unrest in the area, as angry youths and residents attempted to lynch the truck driver. He fled the scene but later turned himself in at the ‘B’ Division Police Station in Oke-Aro.
News of his location drew a crowd to the police station, where agitated residents pelted the building with stones and demanded justice.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary. The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident, according to the command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade.
