At least 10 people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred on Saturday evening at the Tipper Garage Junction along the Dutse-Bwari Road in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The fatal crash involved a heavy-duty truck and several commercial tricycles stationed at the busy intersection. Eyewitnesses said the truck, reportedly experiencing brake failure, sped downhill uncontrollably before crashing into the tricycles, crushing several passengers.
“The scene was horrifying,” said Sarah Audu, a witness. “I was about to cross the road when I saw the trailer speeding past. It lost control and rammed into the tricycles. Some victims died instantly.”
Another resident, Joshua Udo, expressed frustration over the frequency of such incidents at the location. “This junction is a death trap. Nothing has been done to fix it. Trailer drivers here are reckless and drive with faulty brakes. The government must act urgently,” he said, calling on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to intervene and consider restricting heavy-duty vehicles from using the road during the day.
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) arrived swiftly at the scene, assisting in evacuating the dead and injured to hospitals in Gwarinpa and Kubwa.
An FRSC official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
Saturday’s accident has reignited public concern over the safety of the Dutse Tipper Garage junction, which has recorded several deadly incidents due to its poor design and lack of effective traffic control. Residents are urging the FCT administration to implement urgent safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
