Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has said President Bola Tinubu will remain unpopular among Nigerians until the outcomes of his ongoing reforms begin to reflect positively on the country.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Sani noted that Tinubu is fully aware that his current policy direction would draw criticism and cost him public support.
“Tinubu is embarking on a project he knows very well will make him unpopular,” Sani said. “You either do two things: please people by doing what they want, or take difficult decisions for the future of the country, even if it means losing popularity or votes.”
Reflecting on his time in the Senate, Sani recalled the pushback he received when he raised concerns about insecurity in northern Nigeria.
“When I stood up in parliament to speak about the insecurity in the North, I faced serious resistance from fellow northern senators,” he said. “You were expected to remain quiet and support everything simply because the president at the time was from your region.”
Sani emphasized that while Tinubu’s current approach may not be well-received, its long-term impact will be the true measure of its success.
