Three operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have been hospitalised after sustaining gunshot injuries during a raid in the Jahi area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Thursday night.
The officers came under fire from unidentified armed men as they concluded a raid operation on an uncompleted building located in the NNPC area of Jahi.
Acting on intelligence and surveillance reports, the NDLEA team had stormed the premises, where they recovered 74 bottles of codeine, 10 litres of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol (225mg), 4.9 kilograms of skunk—a potent strain of cannabis—as well as five Android phones.
As the team attempted to exit the scene, they were ambushed and shot at, leaving three personnel injured. One officer was hit in the rib, while two others sustained gunshot wounds to the back and leg.
The injured operatives were initially treated at the Police Clinic in Garki, Area 1, before being transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for advanced medical care.
Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), expressed gratitude to the medical staff at both the Police Clinic and the National Hospital. He also personally contacted the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital to ensure the officers received prompt attention.
Currently in Kano on official duties, Marwa spoke with the injured officers by phone, extending his well wishes and assuring them of the agency’s full support.
He vowed that the NDLEA, in collaboration with other security agencies, would do everything possible to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
